Ragas of Indian Music

The core of Indan music is Raga and every aspect of Indian music is built of the Raga .

“Ranjayati iti Ragah” – is a popular expression which means “that which colors the mind is a raga. . Raga has personality and has unique characteristics and have its own time cycle. There are thousands of Indian ragas and 1000 Indian Ragas at 1000 locations in 100 countries is a journey to explore them which I started Four years ago.

I also strongly believe that each location has its own energy and vibration and my quest is to match the Ragas with the location . It has been quite an experience and in this journey felt the innate bliss by playing music for non humans. The journey continues with many memorable experiences and all of them will be documented soon.

Ragas can evoke emotions of the soul and there are ragas for every rasa and every Bhava.

Carnatic Ragas

The very essence of Nada is Lord Shankara. There are many many ragas which are offered to him. Carnatic music’s most popular raga is Sankarabharanam which means the raga is Lord Shankara’s ornament. Also kamboji which is one of the major six of carnatic music is supposed to be on Lord  Shankara’s favorite raga and many composers have composed songs in these ragas on Lord Shiva.

South Indian Music Ragas have emerged from the Sama Veda. They are very structured with the 72 Mela system with innumerable permutation and combinations.

Many carnatic music ragas like Thodi, Bhairavi, Ananda Bhairavi, Varali and many more has no parallels in any of the music of the world.

Ragas for non Humans

During my journey with Ragas in nature I have encountered playing Indian ragas for non humans.

All the animal kingdom love music and there are many videos where most of them have responded positively. Apart from domesticated animals like: Dogs, Cats, Cows, and other animals respond and listen.

I have had many such experiences.

Once while hiking in Shenandoah I had a snake listen few ragas and I was lucky to record that on video.

In boston a dragonfly listened Io 15 minutes , in big Sur a wild Squirrel ,a bunch of deers in denver ,and many more interesting videos.
